Avery the Elephant

Elephants are a classic and are still very popular! children love them and adults love them too! Avery the Elephant is a ballerina elephant who loves to dance and play! Materials Needed

  • Size 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • Size 4 yarn (Doll made with Caron one pound)
  • Poly-fiber stuffing
  • Tapestry Needle
  • 12-14mm safety eyes
  • Embroidery floss (optional for eyelashes)
  • Stretchy hair tie (for skirt)

Abbreviations

  • SC: Single Crochet
  • DC: Double Crochet
  • DEC: Decrease (2 SC together)
  • INC: Increase (2 SC in same stitch)
  • SL: Slip Stitch
  • BLO: Back Loops Only

Head

Round 1: 6 SC into Magic Circle

Round 2: 1 SC, INC (9)

Round 3: 3 DEC, 3 INC (9)

Round 4: 1 SC into each stitch around (9)

Round 5: 1 SC into next 2 stitches, INC (12)

Round 6: INC, 4 DEC, 3 INC (12)

Round 7: 1 SC into each stitch around (12)

Round 8: 1 SC into next 3 stitches, INC (15)

Round 9: 2 INC, 5 DEC, 3 INC (15)

Very lightly stuff the trunk

Round 10: 1 SC into each stitch around (15)

Round 11: 1 SC into next 4 stitches, INC (18)

Round 12: 3 INC, 6 DEC, 1 INC (18)

Round 13: 1 SC into each stitch around (18)

Round 14: 3 INC, 1 Sc into next 12 stitches, 3 INC (24)

Round 15: {1 SC into next stitch, INC (3 times)}, 1 SC into next 12 stitches, {1 Sc into next stitch, INC (3 times)} (30)

Round 16: {1 SC into next 2 stitches, INC (3 times)}, 1 SC into next 12 stitches, {1 SC into next 2 stitches, INC (3 times)} (36)

Round 17: {1 Sc into next 3 stitches, INC (3 times)}, 1 SC into next 12 stitches, {1 SC into next 3 stitches, INC (3 times)} (42)

Round 18-22: 1 SC in each stitch around (42)

Round 23: 1 SC into next 5 stitches, DEC (36)

Round 24: 1 SC into next 4 stitches, DEC (30)

Round 25: 1 SC into next 3 stitches, DEC (24)

Round 26: 1 SC into next 2 stitches, DEC (18)

Finish stuffing and insert safety eyes between rounds 15 & 16 and about 10 stitches apart. If you want to add eyelashes, this would be an ideal time. Simply stitch in the eye lashes where you plan to put the safety eyes.

Round 27: 1 SC into next stitch, DEC (12)

Fasten off and sew opening shut.

Legs/Body

Start by making 4 legs before joining to create the body

Round 1: 6 SC into magic circle (6)

Round 2: INC in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: 1 SC into BLO (12)

Round 4-7: 1 SC in each stitch (12)

When you have completed the fourth leg, do not fasten off. Use this leg to join the rest of the legs.

Round 8: Join each leg with SC. SC around each stitch until you have a total of 48 SC.

Round 9-13: 1 SC into each stitch around (48)

Stuff the legs

Round 14: 1 SC into next 4 stitches, DEC (40)

Round 15: 1 SC into each stitch around (40)

Round 16: 1 SC into next 3 stitches, DEC (32) You can now take this time to sew the gap between the legs shut.

Round 17: 1 SC into next 2 stitches, DEC (24)

Round 18: 1 SC into next stitch, DEC (16)

Stuff the rest of the body. Be careful not to over stuff the body. It will leave large gaps when sewing the top shut.

Round 19: 1 SC into next stitch, DEC (12)

Fasten off and sew the body shut.

Ears (Make 2)

Round 1: 6 SC into Magic Circle (6)

Round 2: INC in each stitch (12)

Round 3: 1 SC into next stitch, INC (18)

Round 4: 1 SC into next 2 stitches, INC (24)

Round 5: 1 SC into next 3 stitches, INC (30)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

You can sew each ear inward or keep them open.

Mouth

Round 1: 7 SC into magic Circle (7)

Round 2: DEC, 1 SC into next 2 stitches, DEC (4)

Round 3: DEC twice (2)Fasten off and leave tail for sewing directly under the trunk of the elephant.

Tail

Leaving a long beginning strand for sewing.

Ch. 9

Row 1: 1 SL into 4th CH from hook. CH 3, SL into same CH, CH 3, SL into same stitch. Fasten off.

Skirt

Round1: Using the hair tie, SC 50 stitches.

Round 2. 1 SC into next stitch. Skip next 2 stitch, 5 DC into next stitch. Repeat until the end. Total of 8 shells.

Hair

Attach 1 piece of yarn to 6 middle stitches on the top of head using latch hook method. Trim to desired size. Take a colored piece of yarn and tie a bow for extra accessories.

Head Assembly

Using a long strand of yarn, sew the head onto the body. Reinforce the head to the body by sewing back and forth through the head and back through the body. Sew over a few more times to keep the head stiff.

Ear Assembly

Use pins to attach the ears before they are sewn on.
